Never before has the mass movement of animals captured such imagination. It is the movement that has given the entire Mara eco-system the title “8th Wonder of the World”. Starting around the month of July heading to October, about 2 million wildebeests gather in the Serengeti plains of Tanzania. Their aim is to move from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara game reserve on the Kenyan side in search of pasture. To do this, they have to survive deadly attacks from predators ranging from lions and leopards, to cheetahs.
For these predators, the wildebeest migration presents a once-in-a-year opportunity for relatively easy food to grow their families. During this period, many wildebeests die and new ones are born. These newborns must adapt quickly and survive the migration.
But nowhere is the spectacle more concentrated than along the Mara River. The wildebeests must cross this river to get into the Maasai Mara reserve. But in this river there lie in wait hundreds of crocodiles who, just like the land predators, see this migration as a chance to beef up their bodily food stocks. To see over a million large animals make a river crossing is a sight to behold, one no less than the sight of large crocodiles engaging in teamwork to ensure that they capture as much prey as possible.
The Migration takes place against a panoramic backdrop of vast open space, interesting plant life and a variety of bird life.
Day 1:
Check in at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi Airport. You are met by an Africa 1900 representative. You will be booked into the Fairview hotel for adequate rest and to familiarize yourself with the Kenyan surroundings.
Day 2:
After a full breakfast, we leave for the Masai Mara, regarded as the 8th Wonder of the World, and a place so captivating it instantly reminds one of a by-gone era, when man was truly integrated with nature, worshipping and fearing it in equal measure. We shall set up camp on the edges of the complex Talek-Mara river eco-system. Our guide will give a rough overview of the Mara and what you might expect to see.
Days 3 & 4:
An expertly-guided exploration of the Savannah. Our guides will take you to those areas that afford the best view of the landscape, and the areas where the famous beasts of the African wild are at their best. The Mara is indeed the Garden of Eden just before the fall. Here, you will see hunters like lions and leopards share the range with prey like buffaloes and antelopes, and here too, day and night, you will see scavengers like hyenas, vultures and jackals come in to pick up what is left of the fight between predator and prey. Of course, a visit to the Mara is not complete without exploring the Mara River and its prehistoric crocodiles.
Day 5:
Wrap up of the tour. A gathering to share experiences. Board a flight back to Nairobi city.
